Before there as a canal, ships had to sail 13,000 miles around South America to get from one ocean to another. The canal made it possible to directly connect the atlantic to the pacific.
What is the Canal in Panama?
Panama is the narrowest strip of land separating the Atlantic and Pacific therefore it is the fastest and easiest route.
Who began this project?
The French began this project but after 9 years, 22,00 deaths and $250 million later, the french gave up.
When did the United States take over?
May 4th, 1904 Americans took over. They damned existing rivers and and flooded 123 square mile area, creating the largest man made lake.
What were the major setbacks of this period?
Setbacks of this period included disease such as malaria and yellow fever which killed many workers on the Canal.
